5 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Session: How to Prepare for Your Photoshoot
Family photos are such a fun way to capture the connection and love you all share, but let’s be honest—getting everyone ready can feel a little overwhelming! As a mom myself, I get it. But don’t worry, I’m here to make the process as easy and enjoyable as possible. Here are my top 5 tips to help you prepare for a stress-free family session!

1. Keep it Simple & Coordinated, Not Matchy-Matchy
When it comes to outfits, think coordinated, not matching. Choose a color palette and let everyone’s outfits complement each other rather than wearing identical looks. Soft, neutral tones tend to photograph really well, but feel free to add some personality with pops of color or textures! The key is to be comfortable so everyone feels their best during the session. Check out some outfit inspiration on my website if you need help deciding!
2. Embrace the Chaos
Family sessions with kids can be a little unpredictable, but that’s where the magic happens! Don’t stress if your little one isn’t perfectly still or if there’s some silliness along the way—that’s part of your family’s personality. I’ll capture those genuine moments of fun and connection. So, relax, go with the flow, and trust that we’ll get beautiful images, even if things don’t go exactly as planned.
3. Bring Snacks & Breaks
We all know that hungry kiddos aren’t happy campers, so pack some snacks or water for little breaks. Quick snacks can help reset any grumpiness and keep everyone energized. Just make sure it’s something that won’t leave stains or mess behind. (My FAV is mini marshmallows!)
And don’t forget, a short break to regroup is always okay—we’ll take things at a pace that works for your family!
4. Timing is Everything
I typically suggest scheduling your session for when your kids are at their best. For little ones, that often means mornings or after nap-time, but not quite golden hour (when they’re rested and happy, before the hunger sets in). We’ll also work to find the best light for outdoor sessions—either early morning or late afternoon to catch that dreamy, golden hour glow. Good timing helps everyone feel their best, and the lighting will be perfect!
5. Keep Expectations Low, and the Fun High!
The goal of a family session isn’t perfection—it’s capturing your family’s authentic connection. So, don’t stress about every hair being in place or every smile being “just right.” The real magic comes when everyone’s having fun, laughing, and just being themselves. I’ll guide you through poses and prompts, but some of the best photos are the candid, in-between moments when everyone is relaxed and having fun.
With these simple tips, you’ll be ready for a fun and stress-free family session. My goal is to make sure you enjoy the experience as much as the final images. So, relax, be yourselves, and let’s create some amazing memories together!
Looking forward to capturing your family’s story!
