What to Wear for Your Family Portraits: A Simple Guide
One of the most common questions I get from families before their session is, “What should we wear?” And I totally get it—choosing outfits for everyone can feel a little overwhelming! But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some simple tips to help make this part of the process stress-free and fun.
1. Start with a Color Palette
The key to a polished look is choosing a color palette that coordinates without being too “matchy-matchy.” Think about colors that complement each other, like soft neutrals (cream, beige, and gray), earthy tones (olive, rust, and mustard), or classic blues and whites. Once you’ve picked a palette, mix and match textures and patterns to add some visual interest! The idea is to have everyone’s outfits flow together naturally, without looking too uniform.
2. Comfort is Key
The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing. If your kids are fidgeting with stiff clothes or itchy fabrics, it’s going to show in the photos. Choose outfits that allow everyone to move freely, and that make them feel like the best version of themselves. For moms, flowy dresses or tops with soft fabrics work great. For dads, casual button-downs or nice sweaters are always a win.
3. Avoid Logos & Bold Graphics
While fun patterns can add personality, try to avoid big logos, bold graphics, or distracting prints. These tend to take the focus away from your faces and the connection between you as a family. Stick to classic styles that won’t feel dated when you look back at your photos years from now.
4. Layers & Textures Add Depth
Layers and textures can really elevate your photos and add some dimension. Think cozy sweaters, soft cardigans, denim jackets, or flowy scarves. These elements create a visually interesting look without being too distracting. Plus, layers are great for outdoor sessions where the weather might change, or if you want to switch up the vibe mid-shoot.
5. Don’t Forget About Shoes
Shoes might seem like a small detail, but they can make a big difference in the overall look. Keep it simple and avoid bright, clunky sneakers or anything that might clash with the rest of your outfits. Neutral shoes or classic styles (think boots, flats, or sandals) tend to photograph best and won’t steal the spotlight.
6. Plan for the Little Ones
For kids, simple and comfortable is best! Think timeless styles like little dresses, soft rompers, or jeans paired with a cute top. And don’t worry if they get a little messy during the session—that’s part of the fun, and we’ll capture those real-life moments, too! Just make sure to have a backup outfit on hand, especially for the younger ones.
7. Accessorize Thoughtfully
Accessories like hats, headbands, and jewelry can add a nice finishing touch, but be careful not to overdo it. A few well-chosen accessories can complement your outfits without taking the attention away from the most important thing—your family! For moms, delicate necklaces or bracelets are a great choice, and for kids, a cute bow or simple hat can add just the right amount of charm.
8. Be True to Your Family’s Style
Most importantly, wear what feels like YOU! If your family is more laid-back, stick to casual, cozy styles. If you love dressing up, go for something a bit more polished. The goal is to capture your family’s personality and connection, so don’t be afraid to let your individual styles shine through.
Remember, your family session is all about celebrating your connection and creating beautiful memories. With a little planning and these simple tips, you’ll be feeling confident and looking your best in front of the camera!
